16 September (Alice Thickett)

Well after all the visual art it was time to do something a bit different! So the last part of the week was spent trying to catch some performances and events.

It was nice to see City Art’s big silk banner, including all the names of the WEYA artists which were added during the first Artist Pavillion lunch!

(Dance 4 performance)

A highlight for me was seeing Ex Easter Island Heads in St Peter’s Church. The group compose musical performances and recruit members of the public to join and perform with them! This was a particular highlight, not just because the sounds were beautiful in the church, and the skill involved in teaching a group of strangers in 2 hours to perform a 20 minute piece- but because I hadn’t realised that my friend was one of the strangers!

– this is a bit of a cheeky lead in to mention that the creative group I manage – No Official Name are also having an exhibition during WEYA called “End of the World Event with Young Artists” – and the friend in the performance is an artist exhibiting in the space! (The exhibition will be open Sunday 16 Midday – 5pm, and also for a one off event later in September, join http://www.facebook.com/noofficialname to find out more!)

So I spent some of the festival organising and setting up for that! Which was shattering… but I still managed to make the Wrap Party at the Castle and Contemporary just before the international artists left.

Just the last weekend to go, and then Nottingham returns to normality….

12 September (Lauren O’Grady)

Sanctuary with Tether at All Saints Church and a secret location! A multi-sensory installation which changed the environment of the church beyond recognition ending with colourful smoking cocktails in a Logan’s Run inspired haven.

A great night to end my WEYA experience, I am sad to miss the end but Liverpool beckons. Please find more information about Tether’s events at The Royal Standard as part of the Liverpool Biennial here: http://www.the-royal-standard.com/programme/service-provider-tether-this-is-it/

Friday 7 September (Lauren O’Grady)

My sculptures are now in residence at their new home (for the next ten days) at Willoughby House, they look like part of the furniture already!

Keep an eye out for the East Midlands section on the BBC breakfast news this weekend – there may be a little something about my work in there!

5 September (Emily Macinnes)

I am honoured and excited to be a part of WEYA as it is a wonderful opportunity to meet artists from different backgrounds and cultures and provides a great platform for the discussion of ideas and possible collaborations.

I am a documentary photographer with a creative approach to visual storytelling – often employing text, video, sound and still photography to communicate stories and create a kind of visual poetry.  At the event I will be presenting a multimedia piece I made in 2010 called Blindsight which is a collaboration of video, photography and sound that is put together in attempt let the viewer step into the shoes of a man who is rapidly losing his eyesight and the emotions that come when faced with that kind of fate.  Dennis, 42, went through a long period of depression before being able to pick himself up and come to grips with such a major life alteration.   The piece will be shown in the Bonington Gallery in the Bonington building of Nottingham Trent University.

Follow this link to see the variety of events that are being held.  If you want to attend any of them you better keep moving as places are going quickly!!

5 September 2012 (Lauren O’Grady)

And so it begins (for me at least!).

My work has been safely delivered to the Paul Smith flagship store in Nottingham so this morning I am ready to install it! My work was chosen by Sir Paul Smith himself to be shown in the store as a solo exhibition within the World Event Young Artists festival.

This afternoon, I will be interviewed by the BBC in the store with my work! I’ll be posting pictures of my installation soon, but in the meantime here’s one of my pieces of work…

30 August, 2012 (Alice Thickett)

All set up for WEYA now! What I planned would take me a couple of hours stretched to 3 days, but that’s how artists roll! After a lot of masking tape and blocks of wood (see photo below), the installation was finally moved into the exact place it needed to be to create an illusion!

No idea what the reaction will be like, or even if anyone spots it, but that’s all part of the fun! Can’t wait for the 7th September now to celebrate the opening of the Bonington and NTU exhibitions!
